Comic Books & Graphic Novels

How to find and use comic books and graphic novels for academic research

What is a graphic novel?

  • A chronicle of New York tenement life in the early 20th century, Will Eisner's 1978 Contract with God is considered the first graphic novel
  • Graphic novel is a format, not a genre; topics include biography, history, historical fiction, religion, mythology, fantasy, science fiction (such as superhero, space opera, dystopian future), mystery/crime, romance, etc.
  • A graphic novel tells a story using pictures laid out in sequential panels, as "visual narrative" and "sequential art"
  • Usually comic books are monthly periodicals; some are weekly
  • Monthly comic books can be collected together to form a trade paperback or a graphic novel
  • Most graphic novels are complete stand-alone stories
