Comic Books & Graphic Novels

How to find and use comic books and graphic novels for academic research

As Spider-man© ® was taught by the loss of his uncle, "with great power there must also come -- great responsibility," so it is important to understand the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of comic books and graphic novels for research

  • Censorship and the Comics Code Authority
  • Copyright and Trademarks
  • Fair Use and Citation
Example

Lee, Stan (w), Mike Ditko (p). Amazing Fantasy 1.15 (1962): 11, Marvel Comics.

Writing & Citing

Citing graphic novels and comic books can be difficult; follow the style for the discipline, organization, or journal for the topic of your research

  • Literature uses the MLA Style, the only style guide with specific comic book citation standards
  • Art History uses Chicago or Turabian Style
  • Education and Social Sciences use the APA Style
